Sapphire glinted against the darkness, the ripples of the river only illuminated by towering streetlights that ran along its edges. The sun had barely set and the world had already been rid of any light that wasn’t made by man. It might have been eerie to some, but the Fool found a soft comfort in it. The warm amber glow of streetlights, neon signs hanging in windows declaring, ‘don’t worry, we’re still open! The sun doesn’t control us!’ Of course, it didn’t say anything as silly as that, but that was no doubt what she took from them. Even so, it was nice. [break][break]
Perhaps it was a testament of how comfortable she had become in the Dark Hour, something that her soul knew far too well, but that her friends would never. They couldn’t understand what it was like; how the green tint signified a reason for her friends to stick around. A common goal was what kept them close, what kept them friends. Beneath her ribcage, her heart tightened at the idea of losing that goal. It was a terrible thing to wish. The Hour had caused so much pain and death, but within the crevices of her mind she struggled to let it go. It wouldn’t affect her fighting, or how she cursed Tartarus along with her friends, but the conflict open left her wide awake in the depths of the night. [break][break]
Crimson hues turned away from the streetlights, digits tightening around the small bag she held at her front. All day had been spent out, enjoying a cup of tea and studying for upcoming exams. She hadn’t even noticed the time when she left the library, and now found herself lost in thought beside the river. Minako’s head slowly shook, attempting to help her regain focus. Her brain must have still been within the books and far from her body. She turned on her heels, moving down the sidewalk towards the dorms, her gaze instantly finding familiar azure locks not far ahead of her. [break][break]
“Minato?” She called out, her pace quickening as she moved towards him. “Hey! What are you doing out so late?” As soon as the question left her lips she knew the subtle hypocrisy in the question, but chose not to make mention of that fact.

Minato's attentions were elsewhere as he walked home. Mostly; mulling over just how alike Port Island really was to Tokyo, when one cut to the quick of the matter. It seemed the manmade city didn't know what a Circadian rhythm was-- at least, not until the Dark Hour came, according to new 'friends'. He'd call them associates for the most part-- except for the fact that he knew just how few people in GENERAL got the opportunity to kill extraplanar beings of malformed emotion with people they actually liked.[break][break]
But their absence would be noticed, part of him protested. By now, their presence-- even that of that halfwit, Iori-- would have sorely been missed were they to vanish.[break][break]
...Is that why I don't want this to end? The idea of 'fun' wasn't long to desert Minato after the accident. It was easier to settle into a shell of studies, of Walkman headphones and solitude, than even contemplate letting people in again. And yet, the Extracurricular Squad's entrance into his life wasn't one of gentle knocking, but a SWAT team kicking one's door down.[break][break]
His Walkman was unkind in its reply. "--Maybe you're just an asshole. Maybe I'm just an asshole."[break][break]
"No one asked you, Aesop." A nail-bitten thumb jabbed at the fast-forward button on the controls-- and in that sped-up whir of cassette tape, it sounded like someone was trying to get his attention. One of the ear-clinging cups of his headphones was pulled off and re-affixed to the vent of his blazer before he turned around-- and as he saw just who it was who was trying to get his attention, a slight smile pulled at his lips as an eyebrow quirked itself upwards.[break][break]
"I could ask you the same thing, sister dear. I hope you weren't out tarnishing the family name." To an outsider, they likely wouldn't have been able to detect the barest hint of joking on the teen's face-- but to his sister, the signs were all there; in his eyes, in the slight twitching of the corner of his lips, in the way that he braced his wrists behind his back. "On my way back from Chagall's. Had time to burn, and exams are out of the way, so I don't need to worry about studying for... A couple days, at least. You?"[break][break]

Features creased upon her face, lips pulling together and nose wrinkling in a look of disapproval. “Me? Minako Arisato, tarnish our prestigious family name?” Her tone honed in on the irony of the fact that here, they were nobodies. Just two more rebellious youth in the crowd with limited supervision and the occasional bad attitude. Still! Hands moved to her hips, planting themselves firmly as crimsons squinted, attempting to maintain this act for as long as possible. Oh yeah, she was annoyed. She was pissed! Nope, her features slipped; lips curving upwards as a giggle that had been brewing beneath the surface slipped out of her mouth. [break][break]
No matter how long they stayed here in this dorm, in this group, Minato would always be the one she felt most comfortable around. His cold demeanor had never been able to scare her away, not even when they were kids. Faint memories of tugging on his sleeve, dragging him along to play with dolls or braid the sapphire locks, even if they hadn’t been long enough to do much with. From the second she was born into this world until it all fell apart, he had always been there, and she had no doubt that story wasn’t going to change. [break][break]
As the giggle faded a soft pout planted on her lips. “You’re lucky, I spent most the day at the library diving right back into studying. I’m pretty sure I did awful on the last exams…” Hues averted as her sentence trailed off. She had never been a perfect straight-A student but knew everyone had expected better than her last scores. Excuses bubbled around her brain about the Dark Hour, about how she had tried, eventually coming to the truth of the matter: these last few weeks she’d spent every waking moment with one of her friends instead of with her head in a book. Her gaze rose to meet his again, “You won’t tell Kirijo-senpai, will you? Pretty please?” Hands clasped together at her chest, either praying or pleading, she wasn’t quite sure which.

A soft chuckle left Minato's lips as his head sway side to side-- it certainly sounded like something Minako would do; much to his chagrin. How many times had he needed to chide her to focus, even back home? "Regardless of your scores, Minako, I'd hope you were keeping your nose to the grindstone for once. We'll find out one way or another soon enough-- which means so will Kirijo-senpai. It's not me you need to be asking to not tell." Another chuckle left him with a slight roll of his shoulders as he looked out toward the road before them.[break][break]
The only one he could have trusted against the whole world. No matter how many times over the past decade and change he may have wished otherwise, Minato knew full well he couldn't let her go by herself after the accident. After that, she was all he had left in the world-- catastrophe did a good job at making one candidly appraise exactly what it was before them. Their family, their blood-- they were all they had left; and he wasn't willing to lose that. Not after everything else.[break][break]
And now it's changing, the traitorous half of his brain piped up-- because of their new group of acquaintances. "...Do you think we can rely on them, Minako? Like..." A soft sigh left him as he turned his head-- deliberately averting his gaze from his sister. "It sounds so stupid, when I vocalize it. Of course we can, outside of Iori, these are some of the most capable upperclassmen Gekkoukan could offer, but-- can we rely on them? Do you think they... Can be trusted?"[break][break]

She couldn’t help but notice the way his gaze left her own, as if he could have somehow been ashamed for the words leaving his lips. It was a fair worry, even she had to admit that. When they had first arrived, it was difficult to know who was safe to allow into her heart and who would have her back through the end of time. That was then, though. Things were different now; it wasn’t just about friendship or loyalty, it was about saving the world from the Dark Hour. The mission that this new scenery had allotted them was worth more than gold, and she found solace in it even more than the trust of her friends. [break][break]
Minato was taller than her, only by a couple inches, but still, it was a strain on her calves to lean upwards, pulling the male into a hug. As close as they were, affection had always been a complication for them. He was stoic and always maintained a cold outer shell, it’s true she saw less of it than most, but it was still there. There wasn’t blame to be had about it, though, it just was, the same way the sun rose and set every day. The redhead didn’t test her luck by lingering in the embrace, pulling back and regaining her composure beside him. Part of her wanted to demand he meet her gaze, maybe even pull him to, but she didn’t. [break][break]
“I don’t think it’s a stupid thing to say, or even to worry about. But, at the end of it all I do trust them, Minato. I don’t think they’d fight so hard beside us if they weren’t in it for real, if that makes sense. I don’t know─”[break][break]
A hand waved in front of her face, as if trying to brush away any falsities in her statements. The gesture was small and playful, but her features wrinkled into a more serious demeanor to preface her next sentence. [break][break]
